Question: What was your first drum set?

I truly started on pots & pans, mattresses, pillows and finally a practice pad! My first real drum kit was a Slingerland Gene Krupa model. I still have that drum set!

Question: Did you ever take private lessons?

I did… I loved playing by myself and figuring out things on my own, but my first drum teacher was critical in my success! His name was Paul Bigos and he kept me motivated and helped me develop techniques I would have never achieved on my own. He also gave a real appreciation for drum history, learning and other players.

Question: Who is your favorite drummer and why?

There is no way I can answer this… I love so many players for a myriad of reasons. I can watch a player in a classroom, on the street, a football field, club, concert or symphony stage and gain insights and/or inspiration that continues to stay with me and moves me.

Question: What makes the Pearl brand special?

Our people… We are a family owned company for almost 70 years that continues to make some of the greatest and most innovative gear in history. The sense of family extends to all of our operations. We have a passion for drums, percussion and music that drives us on a daily basis. For us it is not business… It’s personal! We take great pride in being part of such an incredible community of musicians and artist.

Question: What are your thoughts on the electronic elements so common in percussion these days?

Electronics are a tremendous extension and progression of acoustic drums. At one time there were only acoustic pianos! Electronics are a great addition to acoustic drums. They also offer a lot of opportunities in the home recording world as well as worship market to help control challenging sonic environments and limited space.

Question: How did you make the transition from recreational drummer to professional drummer?

Drumming has always been part of my life. Fortunately my passion for music and drumming has always been at the forefront of my life goals and career.  Music has led to many opportunities I never imagined possible. Drumming gave me insights on so many levels that have supported who I am and my ability to work with others. Music lessons gave me the discipline and motivation to succeed, which followed me throughout my studies in High School, College and Grad Schools! My academic success was a direct result of my music background.  Drumming went from a basic interest to a passion, which progressed from a student to a semi-profession to a full-time profession to a life-long commitment. I am where I am because of music and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Question: What inspires you to continue drumming?

Everything!
