Raymond Massey is a 22 year veteran at Pearl and is the Director of Research & Development. Raymond toured professionally with Tanya Tucker and a number of other country acts and remains active performing and recording in Nashville.

Question: What was your first drum set?

Pearl OEM kit made for “Best Products” retail chain circa 1972.

Question: Did you ever take private lessons?

Yes, Greg Holloway from US Air Force and Dan Nipple Hampton Va.  Best lessons were learned on the band stand from non-drummers.

Question: Who is your favorite drummer and why?

Tony Williams, Dennis Chambers and Vinnie Colaiuta, feel, phrasing and technique.

Question: What makes the Pearl brand special?

Quality and SOUND!

Question: What are your thoughts on the electronic elements so common in percussion these days?

Specifically programmed music in R&B is missing the human touch & feel that provided its emotional identity.

Question: How did you make the transition from recreational drummer to professional drummer? 

Focused hard work together with good ethics, people skills and determination.

Question: What inspires you to continue drumming? 

The challenge to always improve.  It improves so many OTHER areas of my life.  When you work hard and see results it teaches you anything can be accomplished. Music always reminds you that the amount of effort has a direct result on the level of quality.
